TWENTY-ONE

RACHEL

Rachel gazed from her mum’s bedroom window into the dim evening light. In the distance, the glow of the cameras and phones of the gathered media illuminated the night sky. Almost a week had passed since the story had broken, and with no one coming forward and no leads in the case, the group was thankfully diminishing every day. But even though things were quieting, her mother seemed as distressed as the very first day she’d heard the news. She barely spoke, spending most of her time sleeping, watching her favourite soaps, or staring into space.

Rachel had tried to convince her mum to leave, thinking it might be easier to be away from here. But her mother had shaken her head, saying this was still her home, and no one was going to drive her away. Rachel had nodded, thinking how she’d done the right thing by giving her mum the house. This was her home, and once she signed the papers the lawyer was almost finished drafting up, she could do with it what she liked.

She heard a rustle behind her, and she turned from the window. ‘Mum?’ She sat down on the bed, where her mother was now awake. ‘Do you want something to eat? It was still so hard to believe this man she’d known had been so violent; had ended someone’s life – the life of a woman he’d been having an affair with. And if it was this hard for her, she couldn’t begin to imagine what it must be like for her mother.

But her mother closed her eyes again and moved away from Rachel, as if she was something threatening. Rachel sighed. Clearly, her mother needed more time, and the last thing Rachel wanted was to put more distance between them.

Maybe she’d been wrong to try to keep the body from her mother. Maybe if her mum had known, it would have helped cushion the later blow – maybe it would have been easier to find a way out of this darkness. She shook her head, thinking that despite the days that had passed, she was no closer to coming up with anything that might help. Things back at home weren’t making it any easier either. The kids were calling and texting every day, begging and pleading to go away, and Mo continued to send through property listings… his only real form of communication with her right now, which showed how hurt he was that she’d asked him to go. It felt like both her worlds were straining, and she had to do something fast.

She would, she told herself, trying to stay calm. She’d hit on something. Until then, Rachel was
